New Maroochydore Homemaker Centre Tipped to Open Next Month
Sunshine Coast Daily, Property Week, October 2012
The largest retail construction project on the Sunshine Coast is running to schedule and will open its doors to shoppers in early November. This is despite more than 100 days of wet weather since Harvey Norman’s new Maroohydore Homemaker Centre started construction on Maroochy Boulevard in April 2011.
The project features enough electrical cabling to stretch from the Sunshine Coast to Surfers Paradise, more than 45,000 cubic metres of concrete poured on-site, and more than 1000 tonnes of structural steel. The $130 million project is nearing completion in line with schedule, and key tenants Harvey Norman, Domayne and Good Life Gym are now in fit out phase in preparation for opening.
The Maroochydore Homemaker Centre will feature 32,785 sq m of retail showrooms, 500 sq m of premium first floor commercial space, 900 undercover parking spaces and lift access. Construction company ADCO is set to deliver the landmark development on time after managing the challenges of a high profile project of this scale over the past 18 months.
Project manager Chris Carey has been on site since the project started in April 2011. “It has been a real team effort to have the project running to time despite over 1000 days of inclement weather which have hampered the project during this period but has not prevented ADCO from delivering on our contractual agreement with Harvy Norman”, he said. “Between 250 and 300 contracts have worked onsite throughout the construction phase at any one given time. “Most of these people are Sunshine Coast based and, as such, the project has had a very positive impact on the local economy and region”. Before working on the Maroochydore site Mr Carey was at Southbank Brisbane’s southern end development and the Gold Coast Airport terminal redevelopment.
He said the wet weather encountered while working on the Homemaker Maroochdyore Centre was challenging. “You learn something on every project….. that is what’s exciting about this industry. “I am pleased with the result. The building is great – a good addition to the CBD.” Contractors that have worked on the project include concreters, plasterers, painters and steel fabricators.
