The Big Top Market Fresh shopping centre at Maroochydore has been lauded as a “retail revolution”.
The revamped shopping centre, incorporating a farmers’ market managed by Shane Stanley, the man behind the popular Farmers’ Markets, was officially opened last week.
“We’re the first people in this country, maybe the world, to put a farmers’ market in a supermarket environment,” Mr Stanley said.
Reed Property Group’s head of development, Jay Emmerton, said the incorporation of markets within a shopping centre was a “retail revolution that for once in the last decade has nothing to do with the internet”.
Mr Emmerton said he hoped the Market Fresh concept would ensure agriculture would be a viable industry in the region for years to come.
Mr Stanley described it as a “dream come true, not just for me, but for the farmers”.
“To see their smiling faces in there is just gold to us,” he said.
Mr Stanley said the goal was not to make the Sunshine Coast Australia’s number one food destination.
“I believe it already is,” he said.
“We just have to tell the rest of the world.”
Mayor Mark Jamieson said it made economic and environmental sense to provide opportunities for agribusiness to develop and expand in the region.
